The History of the Vibrator

Vibrators date back to the late 1800s, and doctors would use them to treat "hysteria" in female patients. Intrusive massage to relieve a mental condition goes back as much as 2,500 years.

In 1869 a steam powered vibrator was invented to relieve the doctors of having to massage the female patients by hand, and by the 1880s an electromechanical model was produced. Within 20 years a battery powered model was marketed for self treatment at home.
