The History of the Vibrator

Vibrators date back to the late 1800s, and doctors would use them to treat "hysteria" in female patients. Intrusive massage to relieve a mental condition goes back as much as 2,500 years.

In 1869 a steam powered vibrator was invented to relieve the doctors of having to massage the female patients by hand, and by the 1880s an electromechanical model was produced. Within 20 years a battery powered model was marketed for self treatment at home.

The act of intrusive massage was not considered sexual because it was not full intercourse. And the 'home use' internal massager was just like any other home appliance and certainly not considered sexual.
